Cutting diamond

Diamond has the highest refractive index of any natural gem in common use, so its critical angle is small and almost any sensible pavilion reflects head-on light. What separates a good diamond cut from an average one is how much of that light comes back towards the viewer, and how it is broken into brilliance and fire.

Diamond is not cut on a hobby faceting machine: it is sawn, bruted and polished on a scaife, or cut with lasers. Faceting files are still the standard way to plan and communicate a diamond design, and 3D models are what jewellery CAD needs.

Every cut, measured in diamond

For each cut we measured how much of the pavilion, seen face-down, is steeper than diamond's critical angle of 24.4°, so that head-on light reflects instead of leaking out of the back. Weights are for each model at its reference size.

Diamond: questions

What pavilion angle should I use for diamond?

For a round design, about 38.1° or steeper. That is the angle at which head-on light meets both sides of the pavilion above diamond's critical angle of 24.4° and reflects twice before leaving through the crown. Fancy shapes vary, which is why every cut page lists its own figure.

What is the critical angle of diamond?

24.4°, from a refractive index of 2.417. Light striking a facet from inside the stone at less than this angle from the facet's normal passes out; above it, it reflects.

Which cuts work best in diamond?

29 of our 31 cuts reflect head-on light from their whole pavilion in diamond, including BL-Anteros Cut, BL-Vitruvio Cut, Baguette Cut, Cushion Cut, Emerald Cut, Heart Cut.

How much does diamond weigh compared with diamond?

Diamond has a specific gravity of about 3.52 against diamond's 3.52, so a stone of the same size weighs about 1.00 times as much as the diamond.
